36、ternationalFoodPolicyResearchInstitute(IFPRI)implementedaruralhouseholdsurveythatcollecteddetaileddataonruralhouseholdfoodconsumptionandexpenditures,agriculturalproductionpractices,employmentprofiles,childandmother24-hourdietrecall,andchildanthropometrymeasurementsinPapuaNewGuinea(PNG).Theresearchte

37、amcarriedoutthesurvey,whichusedlocation-basedsampling,acrossfiveagroecologicalstudyareas,ofwhichfouroftheareasweredefinedusingelevationandrainfallvariation.Thefiveagroecologicalsurveyareaswereseasonalhighlands,nonseasonalhighlands,seasonallowlands,nonseasonallowlands,andislands(theislandssurveysampl

38、ewasnotdisaggregatedbyelevationorprecipitationpatterns).Inidentifyingseasonalandnonseasonalsurveyareas,weadaptedtherainfallseasonalitycategoriesestablishedbyBourkeandHarwood(2009),whoevaluatedtherelativedifferenceinrainfallbetweenthewetandthedryseasonusingresourcemappingunitsdefinedbythePNGResourceI

39、nformationSystem(PNGRIS).Theareasofthecountrythatexperiencelargeseasonalvariationinrainfall(heavytolight,dependingontheseason)areclassifiedasseasonal,whereastheareasthatexperiencemoderatetocontinuouslyheavyrainfallthroughouttheyearareclassifiedasnonseasonal(seeFigureA1.lintheappendixforthesurveyseas

40、onalityclassificationbyarea).Innonseasonalareas,agriculturalgrowingconditionsremainsimilaryear-round,whereasseasonalrainfallareashaveagriculturalconditionsthatnecessitateavarietyofproductionstrategies.1.owlandandhighlandareasweredefinedusingelevationdata;areas1,000metersormoreabovesealevelwereclassi

41、fiedashighlands,andthosebelow1,000meterswereclassifiedaslowlands.Thesurveycollecteddatafrom270communitiesacross14provinces,fromatotalof2,699households.Itisimportanttonotethatthesurveyisnotnationallyrepresentative.Rather,wechoseapurposivesampleusingcriteriathatwouldenableanalystsofthedatatounderstand

42、thekeyfactorsthatinteractwithinruralhouseholdsandcommunitiestocreatemoreresilientlocalfoodsystems,morediversifiedemploymentprofiles,andimprovedwell-being.GeneralizabierelationshipsbetweenvariablesthataffectsocioeconomicandotherdevelopmentoutcomesinruralPNGcommunitiesshouldbeseenconsistentlyinbothrep

43、resentativeandunrepresentativesurveysamples.Theanalysispresentedinthisreportprovidesdescriptiveresultsacrosseachoftheagroecologicalsurveyareasdescribedabove.Inaddition,itdisaggregatestwosubsampleareas-oneeachfromtheseasonallowlandsandislandssurveyarea.ThesesubsampleareasaretheAutonomousRegionofBouga

44、inville(ARoB)andSouthFlyDistrictinWesternProvince,respectively.Alargersampleofsurveyhouseholdswaspurposefullyinterviewedwithinthesetwosubsampleareas(300householdsinARoBand298householdsinSouthFly)toinformongoingprogrammingandinvestments.However,thesurveytablesandfiguresincludetheseareasinIheirrespect

45、iveagroecologicalzonesaswell.Thus,Ibrtheislandssurveyarea,surveyresultsincludehouseholdsfrombothEastNewBritainandARoB;similarly,fortheseasonallowlandssurveyarea,surveyresultsincludehouseholdsfromCentral,EastSepik,andOroProvinces,aswellasthehouseholdsamplefromSouthFlyDistrict.Descriptivesurveyresults

46、ofhouseholdcharacteristicsdemonstrateayouthbulge,asalargeshareofhouseholdmembersareunder25yearsofage.Thelargestagegroupinthesurveyisindividuals10-14yearsold.Theaveragehouseholdsizeofthesurveysampleissixindividuals,withmosthouseholdsidentifyingamanasthehouseholdhead.About9percentofhouseholdsinthesamp

47、lereportedhavingafemalehead,alargeshareofwhomarewidowed.Thesurveyaskedabouttheliteracystatusofeachmemberofthehousehold.Focusingonadults(individualsover15yearsold),surveydatasuggestthatabout57percentoftheindividualsinthehouseholdsampleareliterate.Overall,agreatershareofmen(62percent)thanwomen(51perce

48、nt)areliterate.However,substantialdisparitiesexistacrossthesurveysampleareas.Only27percentofadultwomenfromtheseasonalhighlandssampleareliterate,comparedto51percentofmenfromthesamesamplearea.Respondentsacrossthesurveyareasreportedsimilarratesofliteracyandprimaryschoolcompletion.However,inSouthFly,although76percentofindividualsreportedcompletingprimar
